Amazon today announced that it's secured rights to stream a number of Premier League games (that's soccer football, for those who don't follow), for three seasons starting in 2019. They'll be available free as part of Amazon Prime Video. (In other words, you have to have an Amazon Prime membership.)

Amazon gets 20 matches a season, including bank holiday fixtures, the company says. Plus it'll stream highlights as well.

The Premier League is the most-watched sports league in the world, and from the 2019/20 season UK Prime members will have exclusive access to watch 20 matches per season, comprising two full fixture rounds – the first December midweek round and the festive Bank Holiday round - featuring live coverage of every Premier League team. This will be the first time a full round of Premier League fixtures will be broadcast live in the UK. In addition, Prime members will be able to watch weekly highlights of all Premier League matches throughout the season.

The Guardian expanded on the deal somewhat:

BT has bought the other remaining rights package, paying £90m per year for exclusive live coverage of 20 midweek Premier League games each season. From August 2019 BT will show 52 live games per season, and Sky 128.

It is the first time that packages of livestreaming matches have been offered by the Premier League, under a strategy introduced by the chief executive, Richard Scudamore. He has been seeking to lure a deep-pocketed technology company such as Amazon, Facebook, YouTube or Netflix to help to continue to drive up earnings from media rights.

Amazon has been in negotiations about the two package for months – against rivals including BT – after the completion of the sale of the most valuable TV rights packages in February.

NBC has rights to stream the Premier League in the United States.

Over these two December fixture rounds Prime members will be able to watch every team, every game, so no matter which Premier League team you support, you're guaranteed to see them play live on Prime Video."

Premier League Executive Chairman Richard Scudamore said: "Amazon is an exciting new partner for the Premier League and we are very pleased they have chosen to invest in these rights.

"Prime Video will be an excellent service on which fans can consume live Premier League football – including for the first time in the UK a full round of matches – and we look forward to working with them from season 2019/20 onwards."
