Dolby Atmos

Apple today at its WWDC developer conference in San Jose announced that its Apple TV 4K box will soon support Dolby Atmos.

If you've yet to experience Dolby Atmos, think of it like this: Instead of joint pointing sound in a certain direction — center, front left and right, rear left and right — Atmos can steer sound to specific locations. And that makes things even more immersive.

You'll need audio hardware that supports Dolby Atmos, of course. And while we're still a little early in that process, you can get sound bars that support Atmos for less than $1,000.

Then you'll need source hardware that supports Atmos. That's where Apple TV 4K comes in. The update will come in TVOS 12.

And then you'll need content. And just like it did with the leap from 1080p to 4K resolution, Apple will offer free upgrades to iTunes content that supports Dolby Atmos.

The upgrades will come this fall, Apple said.
