DirecTV Now DirecTV Now's streaming plans are increasing by $5 a month starting Aug. 1, 2018, if not sooner.

Update July 30, 2018:

The new, increased prices are now in effect for all new and currently subscribing customers.

Update 10 a.m. July 2, 2018:

We've got even more new information. AT&T tell us that the $5 increase goes into effect July 26 for new customers. The increased rate for existing customers will be based on their billing date.

Update 11:50 a.m. July 1, 2018:

The morning after slipping news of the DirecTV Now price increases into the inboxes of its customers, AT&T gave the following statement to CordCutters. The $5 across-the-board price hike, the company says was (as we also noted below) to bring its streaming plans in line with the competition.

Here's the statement in full:

In the 18 months since our launch, we have continued to evolve our DIRECTV NOW products to serve this new customer set and compare favorably with our competitors. To continue delivering the best possible streaming experience for both new and existing customers, we're bringing the cost of this service in line with the market—which starts at a $40 price point.

New: PlayStation Vue is also raising prices

Original post follows:

DirecTV Now is sending out emails tonight warning of impending price increases. We've gotten one ourselves, and a Reddit thread confirms the most basic plan and and the third-tier-plan increases . Here's what we know so far:

  • The basic "Live a Little" plan is increasing from $35 a month to $40 a month.
  • The second-tier "Just Right" package will go from $50 a month to $55 a month.
  • The third-tier "Go Big" plan is going from $60 a month to $65 a month.
  • The largest "Gotta Have it" plan is going from $70 to $75 a month.

The price increases will be effective Aug. 1, according to the email we received. Some folks in the Reddit threads are seeing slightly earlier dates, though.

This is coming from AT&T/DirecTV Now marketing and not PR, so that's all we've got for now. But the email we (and others) received does mention that we can now add a third simultaneous stream for another $5 a month, and it mentions the new Spanish-language plans DirecTV Now rolled out earlier in June.

The DirecTV Now price increases bring the extremes in line with PlayStation Vue, which is $40 on the low end, and $75 for its most expensive plan.

Also, we can expect to see in future releases:

  • An option for 100 hours of cloud-based DVR. (Currently 20 hours is free.)
  • Parental controls
  • "More ways to stream on your favorite devices"
  • And more local channels

No word yet on whether the DirecTV Now apps will gain a performance boost — particularly on Roku, which is nearly unusably slow.

We'll update this post as we learn more.
