Sling TV

What you need to know

  • Reports that Sling TV is down are coming in this morning.
  • It looks like it might be due to an AWS outage.
  • This, too, shall pass.

Reports are coming in this morning of an outage involving Sling TV — and a number of other prominent online services.

DownDetector, which monitors reports of outages across the internet, is showing reports that Sling TV is struggling, as well as other online stalwarts as Reddit, Waze, Roblox and Pinterest.

The real standout, though, is AWS. That's Amazon Web Services, and it serves as a database backbone for a large number of online-based companies.

Sling acknowledged the outage on Twitter, saying that the ability to log in or sign up was affected.

DownDetector's outage map is showing about what you'd expect, with the major reports coming from the larger cities in the U.S. It does go to show, however, that it's not a regionalized outage.

Amazon reported an outage at its Northern Virginia AWS hub.

6:22 AM PDT We are investigating connectivity issues affecting some instances in a single Availability Zone in the US-EAST-1 Region.

6:54 AM PDT We can confirm that some instances are impaired and some EBS volumes are experiencing degraded performance within a single Availability Zone in the US-EAST-1 Region. Some EC2 APIs are also experiencing increased error rates and latencies. We are working to resolve the issue.

It's a particularly bad morning (not that there's ever a good time) for Sling TV (and AWS in general) to go down, given that it's the first full weekend of college football in the United States.
