For as long as I can remember I have always said that I wish every book series would be created as a TV series instead of a movie. When you're compiling all the story into a 2-hour film you end up missing a lot of the best parts. Some might seem less important than others, but those little scenes can sometimes be our favorite part of the story. I can't describe how sad I was when the live-action Harry Potter film was released and it didn't include the House Elf kitchen that you had to tickle the pear in a fruit bowl painting to get to. (Or the entire story arch of Dobby's insane girlfriend, for that matter.)
This was no different when I walked into the movie theater to watch the first live-action film of Avatar. I went into the theater, prepared to be disappointed, and was still even more upset than I had expected to. I mean, come on! Five Earth benders were needed to move one small boulder? What happened to talented benders being able to just stop their feet on the ground and cause earthquakes to shake down their enemies? But, knowing all of this, I'm pleased to announce something that I'm actually excited for.
That's right, Netflix is working to create a whole new live-action TV series of Avatar: The Last Airbender. Excuse me while I go excitedly scream for a moment. Now, the words "re-imagined" might give you a little scare, but hold on for just a minute. In a later Tweet from @NXOnNetflix they have confirmed that the original creators of Avatar: The Last Airbender will still be working on this project with them. I'm going to assume this means that, even if they miss bits from the original animated series, there will still be enough of the original story and juicy good parts that we won't be disappointed. Not in the same way we were with the film, anyway.
How excited for you for this?
I don't know about you, but I've been following Avatar: The Last Airbender and all of the series that have branched from it. Ever since the first animated series, I have been massively addicted, and I literally can not wait to start watching this.
