Colby Covington (14-1) is a fast rising star, and briefly held the Interim Welterweight title last year. Covington has been a ground control fighter, and has a background as a champion amateur wrestler. Covington was the Interim Welterweight champion for about one month in 2018, but an injury prevented him from facing Tyron Woodley. He may have been stripped of that title, but he hopes a win over a legend could propel him to face Kamaru Usman for the proper championship.

Robbie "Ruthless" Lawler (28-13) is a longtime star of MMA, and a former UFC Welterweight title holder. He won the belt in a against Johny Hendricks, in a rematch of their bout for the vacant title. After losing the title to Tyron Woodley in July of 2016, Lawler has gone 1-2 and dropped to 11th in the rankings. Lawler mostly lets his kickboxing skills do the talking for him. Covington has tried to draw Lawler into a war of words ahead of this matchup, but so far Lawler has ignored the bait.
