This week, the UFC Fight Night series brings a matchup between two popular Lightweight combatants. Both of them have had shots at the championship, but each came up short. UFC Fight Night Iaquinta vs. Cowboy is set for Saturday, May 4. It will be streaming live from the Canadian Tire Center in Ottawa, Canada. The entire event is on ESPN+, and it starts with Prelims at 5 p.m. Eastern time, leading up to the Main Card at 8 p.m. Eastern.
"Raging" Al Iaquinta (14-4-1) is the 4th ranked UFC Lightweight contender and a bit of a fan favorite. He joined the UFC in 2012, after a few years fighting in a local New Jersey MMA promotion. He started in "The Ultimate Fighter 15" show, earning a spot in the Lightweight final. After that, he ran through most of the competition until his shot at a vacant UFC Lightweight title. Unfortunately, due to rules surrounding weigh ins, and his appearance as a replacement opponent, he wasn't eligible to win the championship in the fight. He lost the fight anyway to current title holder Khabib Nurmagomedov. It is easy to imagine that he wants a proper chance to face him again with the title on the line.
Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone (35-11) is the 8th ranked UFC Lightweight contender, but he's a huge fan favorite in the UFC. He has had a long career, and has fought in multiple weight classes. He had much success over the first six years of his time in the UFC, but the last three years have been far less successful. Since January of 2017, Cerrone is 3-4, with most of his losses coming from his time in the Welterweight division. He won his first fight back as a Lightweight, and could be hoping that move is just what he needs to get back to his winning ways.
