Shakur "Fearless" Stevenson (12-0) enters this world championship fight in great physical health, but carrying fresh emotional pains of grief. Stevenson's father, Alfredo Rivera passed away just one month ago and it's unclear how it may affect the fighter on Saturday. Stevenson has shown an ability to focus on competition and shut out distractions, going back to his silver medal performance in the 2016 Olympics. It was during that run that he met and began dating another boxer named Jajaira Gonzalez. How could he have known that three years later he would be undefeated and facing her brother for the vacant WBO featherweight title?

Joet Gonzalez (23-0) says that his dislike for Shakur Stevenson from the moment he met him. Stevenson represents the opposite of everything Gonzalez learned about being a fighter from his father, Jose who was a Silver Gloves title holder. Gonzalez learned to be humble, proper, and quiet but he tells Mark Kriegel of ESPN that his opponent is fake and obnoxious. It has gotten bad enough that the father Jose Gonzalez is not currently speaking with his own daughter. Joet has dreamed of a chance to become a champion and the ways that it will change the lives of his entire family. Gonzalez has been showing his power punches more, with knockouts in 10 of his last 13 fights. Will he have the physical and mental toughness needed to KO amidst this drama?
